Visit to The Community Service Centre for the Deaf

On the 7th of August 2009 10:00 a.m., all the participants gathered at the Masjid Jamek LRT Station to make a move to the Community Service Centre. Before that, the participants had to collect the food ordered for the centre’s students at a nearby McDonald’s restaurant. After a 10 minutes walk from the LRT station, all of the participants besides Leo Wei Keat reached at the centre for the first time. Ushered by a volunteer in the centre, we were brought to the canteen to place our food. Ms Cindy, one of the two principals of the centre, led us to the computer room and introduced us the centre by showing us the PowerPoint slides. From the slides and narration of Ms Cindy, we learnt about the initiation of the centre and how the volunteers and the deaf students had worked hard and struggle to build a school of them. We were also amazed by the abilities, skills, knowledge and most importantly the will-to-learn of the deaf students despite their hearing disability. We were also touched by their aspirations to serve and contribute to the community regardless of their own disability.

At 11:00 a.m., the deaf students gathered at the canteen for their lunch. We were once again amazed by the deaf students as they showed good discipline and courtesy while taking the food from our hands. They were also lively, lovely and friendly when we tried to approach them. Although most of us were not familiar with sign language, during the lunch break we had our fun moment playing and communicating with the kids, totally overcoming the language barrier.

After the lunch, we were led to the classroom and enjoyed a dance performance by the deaf students. The performance was enjoyable and we were certainly amazed knowing the fact that they couldn’t listen to the music. Requested by us, the principals – Ms Cindy and Ms Rose, taught us to sing in sign language together with the children. We fell for the beauty of sign language as we signed the lyric of the song.

The visit ended with a cheque presentation, amounted RM 1,500, as a gesture of gratitude to the centre for their contribution to the community and the hearing-impaired. We left the centre at around 1:00 p.m. after the cheque presentation.

The House of Victory Elderly Home Visit

On the 26th of July, the Lions Club of KL North organized a visit to the House of Victory Elderly Home at OUG. The objective of the activity was to spend time with the old folks as well as to bring happiness to them. The activity was participated by several Lions club along with us and Leo Club of SMK Jinjang North.

We arrived at the home at around 10am and shortly after, the activity started at with emcee Ln.Chin Wee providing an introduction. Speeches were then delivered by OC Ln.Tan Teoh and region chairperson Ln.Tan Poh Leng respectively.

An ice-breaking session was to follow with Lions and Leos alike attending to the old folks. It was an interesting affair at first as some of the old folks only speak certain dialects, eg. some spoke Cantonese while some Hakka etc. Thankfully though, this was sorted out quickly. Some of the old folks were keen to share their background and stories, from which I found out one particular old folk came from China decades ago.

Lunch was next, the participants were quick to distribute the food to the old folks. A few of the less able elderly were attended to, so they too could enjoy their meal. After lunch, we had an activity session. This was started by one of the old folks, who said he loved singing. True to his words, everybody was trilled by his singing and happily clapped to the tune. Lions and Leos then joined in the 'karaoke' session.

The fun continued with a birthday celebration for Mdm Phun and Mr.Lee who turned 85 and 60 respectively in July. Both of them were delighted to see the cake and thanked everybody for the celebration.

As soon as the cake were cut and eaten, we took a group photo before we said our goodbyes to the old folks.

“Applying the 7 habits in Lionism and Life” Workshop

On the 11th of July 2009, the Lion Club of KL North organized a workshop for all Lions and Leos at The Otomotif College. Leo members who were present are Leo Kan Sha, Leo Wei Keat, Leo Sheng Wei, and Leo Jia Hong.

The workshop started off with registration at 8.30am. The Leo’s were allocated seats and group system. Opening speech was presented by Lions Club of KL North president, Lion Tan Teoh. The workshop begins with an overview of objectives of the 7 habits facilitator by Lion Ben S’ng. It then continues by starting off with:

Habit No.1: Be Proactive (Ln Wesley),
Habit No.2 Begin with the end in mind (Ln Simon),
Habit No.3 Put first things first (Ln Vijayan),

In between the workshop, there was break for refreshment and toilet break for 15 min. Then continue back with…

Habit No.4 Think win/win (Ln Ben S’ng)
Habit No.5 Seek first to understand, then to be understood (Ln Vijayan)
Habit No.6 Synergize (Ln Simon Soh) and,
Habit No.7 Sharpen the Saw (Ln PDG Sam Leong).

After finishing the 7 habits, it was lunch break. Food and drinks were ready as we all seated together. Lunch was an hour and we headed back to the class room. Then participants werebroken into individual groups to discuss on how to apply the 7 habits in lionism and activities that benefits members.

Presentation was then carred out by every group which was followed by a reflection session to refresh on lessons we have learnt.

Lastly, presentation of certificate was carried out by the organizing chairperson, Ln Wesley and group picture was taken. The workshop ended at around 5.30pm.

Officially, the Leo Forum is a climatic event on every Leo club's calender, a gathering of Leo members from every corner of West Malaysia, to foster closer ties between Leos from different regions. Personally, as it was held in Penang, it was a chance to eat good food, meet new people and sell more badges :P
